Long Point - November 19, 2006

Early starters on the red courses were slightly inconvenienced by a misplaced control #2. The lesson I draw is that one cannot trust one's effforts at 7 a.m. on the morning of the event after a night spent in a tent. However, Maurice still managed to beat Don Barker, whom we slowed with (A) a late start in the heat, and (B) a request that he bring in some of the controls.

Overall, we found our first time organising an event for NTOC an enjoyable experience. The number of participants was not large, but covered all the courses. Everyone was notably friendly (many thanks). The weather perfect. It was good to see three parties include people who had never been orienteering before.

Night event, Archery Range - October 27, 2006

Night Orienteers on target at the Archery Range

25 owls turned out for this event with setter Eric Baker promising a good challenge despite the short courses. The times showed this was the case. Peter Merrotsy, Erica Smith and Felicity all had battery failures which slowed their progress. Some Red course runners especially Graeme Cooper also had the problem of 2 wrong flag numbers to contend with, but fortunately this only affected the early red coursers. Maurice Anker was setting a good time after the first leg only to be nearly scratched from the course by falling into a deep depression containing a blackberry bush. To add insult to injury the blackberry pulled his pants down as he got up preventing him from running anywhere. The good news for Maurie was that it was dark.

There was a good turnout of the younger brigade, most of whom were doing their first night event. Jackson Doak especially was able to overcome getting lost in the dark to get back just behind his brother and dad on the Blue Course while the teenage trio of Alinta Merrotsy, India Winiger, and Mona Sajeev were fastest on the Green.

Jane Watt and Don Barker orienteered accurately in the dark to be quickest over the orange and Red courses respectively. Don's fancy headlight probably gave him the edge over Jo Ho and Nathan Jeffrey who were both within 2 mins.

Boorolong Forest - April 23, 2006

There was quite a good frost on Sunday morning. The autumn day was certainly glorious, amongst the best that the New England has to offer. Fourteen cars found their way out to Boorolong Nature Reserve, and over thirty folk lost themselves, to various extents, in the beautiful forest there.

Alinta set the Blue and Green courses, her first experience at setting, and did an excellent job. She used a good variety of settings for the controls and a good mix of handrails, passing through a pretty section of the reserve. She also 'advised' Peter, especially on the Red course, aiming to make it as difficult as possible. Apparently, one of the orange controls (# 10) was too difficult; and two of the Red control descriptions could have been tighter. These errors were Peter's alone, and he promises to do a better job next year.

It was very pleasing to see everyone enjoying being out in the bush and persevering to overcome any navigational problems to find even the hardest control. Of all the fine results, Don Barker's 10 minutes per kilometre on the subtle Red course is most noteworthy.

Avondale Forest - March 19, 2006

A cool breeze greeted the early arrivals at Avondale Forest this morning, surprisingly cool compared to the balmy conditions in Amidale. However the sun soon rose to its task and the day turned out to be a very pleasant one.

In the Blue course, which was just as rough under foot as any of the courses, Zoe took the honours with a very creditable 44 minutes, followed not far behind by Michael and Disa Smart. The green course was hotly contested with James Poole, the Lenffer/Degortardi, and the Merrotsy/Winiger/Lankester combinations all within a few minutes of one another.

Elsie Baker performed well as usual to take the short orange course from Michael Dennis out on his second course after shadowing son John, while Eveline & Brian Helmrich did quite well in coming second to the more experienced David Clayton in the long orange.

Narelle Clayton probably thought she had the short red course to herself, but unfortunately for her Eric Baker suffered a dizzy spell part way around the long red and had to convert to short. Don Barker maintained his consistent level by taking the long red from Felix Burkhard, who obviously was not trying hard enough because he still had enough energy to run up the hill from the last control to the finish. Nathan Jeffery had a slight navigational lapse and saw more of the forest than he intended.

It is particularly pleasing to see some relative newcomers, several with young families, becoming regular attenders at our events.

Dumaresq Dam - February 22, 2006

The final 2006 Twilight Orienteering event was held at Dumaresq Dam on February 22nd. The most notable feature of the evening was the enthusiasm of the junior brigade, some of whom ran three courses and then went swimming and canoing! The family of black swans currently resident on the lake did not seem to be particularly upset by the intruders, but quietly moved to another part of the lake.

James Poole decided that the time had come to try his first solo Orange course. The fact that he was the only starter made it that much harder, as there was no one to follow, and no one coming up behind to reassure him he was still on the right track. His time of 70 minutes was very good for a first "solo" Orange course.

All the experienced orienteers competed in the short red course (the hardest class), and the pressure was really on. Peter Merrotsy finished in 25:42, but Nathan Jeffery caught him after giving him three minute start. When Maurice Anker took 26 minutes after a couple of minor navigational mishaps it looked as if Nathan may have broken through for his first ever Red course win in Armidale. However, the Barker-Smith family finally arrived, and Don and his son Lloyd took up the challenge. Lloyd started after his father, but comfortably beat him home, finishing in 21:41 to set the fastest time. Nathan was close behind with 22:37, with Don a very close 3rd in 23:55.

A few die-hards stayed for the barbeque - the electric barbeques and lights make it very easy these days. The stand-in organiser disgraced himself by ripping open the wrong blue esky and helping himself to the Ankers bananas, but apart from that everyone behaved themselves!

Drummond Park - February 15, 2006

The second event in the NTOC twilight series at Drummond Park gave the red and green course runners some problems. The first red control was not marked correctly and another common control became difficult to find when a small clearing which was the clue didn't show up on the map. The map covers Drummond Park and the Snow Gums Reserve. Both are complex areas where the detail changes every year making map corrections necessary. Couple this to not enough time spent in preparation and you have one apologetic course setter.
