Xmas event - Oakview - December 7, 2008

This event was run on a handicap score basis with flags worth 5 points to orienteers who found flags with their nominated degree of difficulty and 1 point for every other flag.

On the Short Red course only Felix Burkhard stayed penalty free, while Alinta and Graeme also on Short Red and David on Orange got all the flags but were over the time limit.

On the Long Red, Don, Peter and Kaz got all the flags and it was only the slight time differences that separated them. All three, and Felix, pushed the allowed runners' time of 45 minutes to the limit with Don using his local knowledge (having set the State league event this year on the map) to do it in 42 mins. The Xmas trophy was handed to Don for the second time in the 6 years since its construction. As seen in the photo of the trophy presentation Don is maturing as an orienteer, this year not needing Felicity's help as he did in 2003.

It was nice to see ex-club president Deborah Narayanan from Newcastle make a guest appearance whilst visiting Armidale.

Sunnyside TSR - November 16, 2008

About 30 people ignored the weather forecast of showers and possible storms, and headed out to Sunnyside for a great morning of orienteering. Alinta Merrotsy ably set the Blue and Green courses, and abetted her father Peter in the setting of the Orange and Red courses. The setters' philosophy was to place a large number of controls to keep everyone navigating all the way, to make the runners go around in circles often, and to make the Red course as challenging as possible. The TSR is not a large area, with roads and fences to help the Orange course. So Red course setting was difficult, and, in one fell (or is that foul) swoop, we decided to remove such trivial navigational aids from the Red maps. The trick appeared to work well.

Zoe navigated without dad's help, and did very well on the Blue course, even if she did get her feet wet. Campbell participated in his first event, and should be confident enough to try an Orange course soon. Sandy and Nicole took on the Short Orange course and were (still?) running at the end. Michael's sharp time in the Long Orange may tempt him to tackle the more difficult navigation next time. Jenny and Kas set the pace in the Red courses, and both should be congratulated for their very sharp navigation on a challenging map.

Well, it did rain. A welcome downpour at 12:30 cooled everyone down and dispersed most home for lunch, except for a few stragglers who wanted a good soaking while watching the nesting birds and the new-born lambs.

It was great to see all the smiles as everyone finished their course. Thank you to every one for being patient with a rogainer who is still learning how to set orienteering courses. The critical appraisal of some control placements was accepted, with the promise that we will try to do better next year. I was amused, though, that two of the folk who claimed that the second last Red control was too challenging had both set courses here, and both had used the same feature for a control placement [Ed: no comment], and still had difficulty finding it.

Mount Duval, East Newholme - October 19, 2008

The morning started with control description printing the computer refused to hurry, printing international symbols with glacial slowness, and refusing all entreaties to use draft mode & just hurry up! It now seems that if I'd taken the advice that I give customers (just switch everything off & start again!), then all would have been well ...

In the end the only thing missing was English control descriptions this wasn't all bad, as it gave us a chance to introduce some people to the mysteries of the International Symbols! I did underestimate the number of maps a bit (my email survey prior to the event may have made me unduly pessimistic about numbers likely to attend), but thanks to Felicity Barker-Smith generously giving up her Short Red course map for her mother, everyone got the map they wanted.

Keeping Orange & Red courses short seemed to encourage people to have a try at courses they wouldn't normally do Short Red in particular was very popular. Judy Colman was one who tried a Short Red, while Jack & Marley Sinden did their first orange course for 2 years.

It was great to welcome some newcomers - the Esterhuizen family, the Symons family, and Jennifer Drewitt we hope to see them all at future events.

Standout performances were James Symons (47:40) and Keiran Dennis (49:40), who gave us one of the closest finishes seen in a Blue course for some years well done boys! It was also surprising just how tightly packed the Long Red field was with the young cub (Kazimir) beating the wily old fox (Maurice).

Some really interesting comparisons emerge when kay rates (minutes per kilometre) are compared between Long & Short Red competitors. For example, Eric Baker won Short Red in 33:05, and Kasimir Gregory won Long Red in 55:40. Can we declare an overall winner? Eric's kay rate was an excellent 10:65, but Kaz's was 10.32 a narrow victory to Kazimir. Another really close race was between Alinta Merrotsy (Short Red) & her father Peter (Long Red). They started together, and Alinta declared victory because she was first back by almost 30 minutes. But when we look at the kay rate, while Alinta's 13.87 minutes/km is very good, Peter just pipped her with 13.13 minutes/km.

Now for the big confession. Peter & Maurice were right control 8 was on the wrong rock face. On climbing up to collect the flags, I stumbled on a mangy old termite mound clearly the one inside the control circle. From there I looked up & could see the flag at the foot of a rock face, but there was also a rock face below me, which was quite obviously the one mapped (the upper one is mapped as a boulder field). The unmapped rockface is directly above the mapped one, so people who came over the top of the ridge had no problem they almost literally fell over the flag where it was whereas those who came in on the contour from the North finished up at the right rock face, but didn't find the flag. So I guess that makes Maurice & Peter officially 1st & 2nd!

Controls were collected in a fraction of the time it took to put them out, and we were on our way by about 5:00pm. Even so, the dew must have already been dampening the grass, as I started having trouble getting my ute up even the slightest of rises. High gears & a light foot were the order of the day, so it was a relief to finally reach Newholme Road.

Thanks to Jane for running the event on the day, and to Maurice for assistance with roadworks on the previous day.

Saw Mill Creek - July 27, 2008

About 30 orienteers made the trip to Sawmill Creek on a cool winter's day to enjoy a beautiful bit of forest. The forest has become much denser over the past years making for slow going underfoot with reduced visiblity. The wildlife has increased with lots wallabies and 3 sightings of echidnas.

The Orange Course proved to be the most difficult for standard with both Michael Smart and Garry Slocombe getting lost following the wrong creeks in the tricky well vegetated valley. Felicty Barker-Smith kept a cool head in the tricky conditions to be fastest.

Kasimir Gregory was fastest in the Long Red with a smart time of 68 mins in the slow going. Previous mappers of the area Terry Cooke and Maurice Anker battled for 3rd place both had a few minor problems with their map.

All the starters in the Short Red successfully navigated the very tricky course which is a teatamnet to the navigational standard in the club. Alec Watt - a reject from the Long Red - was fastest ahead of Alinta Merrotsy.

John and Kieran Dennis showed the benefits of regular orienteering to do very quick times in the Green and Blue courses respectively. The farmland on the edge of the forest combined with a faint track through the upper gullies of the forest made these 2 courses most picturesque for the course setter.

West Newholme - June 29, 2008

The 29th turned out to be a very pleasant winters day sunny & cool, just about right for orienteering. It appears by the times that the courses were either too hard or the participants were too tired from the night before. I noted that Don opted to tutor Michael Smart rather than put in a time. Maurice was also a bit foggy as well he missed a control altogether. I also noted at the second last control on the Long Orange there was bit of Rogainers/Orienteerers past. [See photo]

Blue Hole - June 1, 2008

The number of competitors at Blue Hole on Sunday 1 June was perhaps down a little on recent events. However, dire forecasts of rain proved unfounded; conditions on the day were almost ideal for orienteering.

The map at Blue Hole is quite a challenging one both to set and to run. Gara Gorge divides the area into two almost discrete parts. Powers Creek makes the southern third of the map hard to access. There are steep slopes, and complex rock detail particularly to the south of the gorge. Blue, Green, Orange and Short Red courses were mainly in the more open country north of the river. Competitors on the Long Red course first did the Short Red course and then (suitably exhausted) changed maps and undertook a Micro Red course (11 controls in 2 km) amongst the granite boulders south of the river. We can compare performances over the two parts of the course (and with those of competitors who did only one of the two parts).

Four competitors (Kasimir & Boahdan Gregory, Don Barker and Eric Baker) achieved times less than 10 minutes per km on the Short Red course. - with Kasimir the fastest at 7.8 minutes per km. However times per km on the Micro Red course were on average 80 percent longer for those who completed the whole Long Red course. The fastest times on the Micro Red course were by Don and Felix (15.7 and 17.1 minutes per km respectively).

Dumaresq Dam - May 4, 2008

A perfect autumn Sunday brought out a good number of orienteers to Dumaresq Dam.

Ramona did most of the planning for the blue and green courses. These courses were set on the western side of the dam and did not cause too many problems to our experienced runners. The orange and red courses were not very difficult, but designed to give the orienteer different route choices. The first leg forced people to choose between running around the left or the right side of the dam. The actual measured distance via the right was shorter, but added the gully below the dam wall onto your course. Subsequently most (fast) runners took the left side as it provided better running terrain. Apologies to all runners, who were confused by a wrong flag number - they would (of course) have done much better...

In the green course John Dennis blitzed the field 7 minutes ahead of Sandy & Nicola Watson. John's dad Michael Dennis also ran a best time, but on the orange course. The short red course was won by Sue and Brent Gregory in just under an hour. Alinta Merrotsy came second - well done since she is only just advancing into the red courses. The long red course was hotly contested with 10 runners. Peter Merrotsy did well, but Don Barker was faster... just to be displaced by Eric Baker, who had a very good day and came first on the 6 km course in under 55 minutes!

Congratulations to all participants - everyone did well! Special thanks go to Bob Hawkins who helped with collecting the flags.
